There’s the occasional online tshirt store that really knows how to make you feel warmer and fuzzier than a nice wool jumper and hot water bottle in the middle of winter.

Say g’day to How 2 Tshirts, a British label providing one of the most enjoyable web experiences I’ve had in quite a while.

The How 2 Tshirts website is interactive, with tees sliding across your monitor on virtual hangers, digitally steam-pressed and crease-free, for you to ogle and drool over.

The tee designs, like the website itself, ooze style without over-doing things. It’s raw, but edgy. Like a good piece of fresh broccolli.

How 2 Tshirts are a character-filled and refreshing, a real treat in comparison to the increasing rubble of labels trying too hard to get attention without offering a friendly and genuine product. Love it!

Phwoooooaaaar.

I don’t say that word much.

.

But Design By Humans is worthy of world acclaim….plus a great big phwoooooaaaar….with the super-cool range of user submitted range of tshirt designs this schweet new online label offers.

I honestly have struggled for a long time to find a professional outfit of professional outfitters who could possibly give Threadless.com a run for their money. And Design By Humans could well be the one compete for the quest to the holy grail.

The reasons I think Design By Humans can put Threadless to the test are as follows:
i) The range of designs available for purchase is already extensive (and they haven’t been around for all that long!)
ii) The prize money for winning designs is very respectable sum for budding designers
iii) The quality of the t-shirts and print techniques used are second to none

So, in case you weren’t up to speed with how these ongoing t-shirt design competitions work, here’s the deal-e-o.

Five new Shirt of the Day winners are chosen each week. Each wins $750 ($500 cash, $250 credit). One of these is chosen to receive an additional $1000 cash for Shirt of the Week. Each month one of the previous Shirt of the Week winners will be chosen as Shirt of the Month and win an additional $1750 ($1500 cash, $250 credit).

Cotton Cow is a fresh t-shirt “community” hailing from the shores of Germany.

I chatted to Miro recently, the owner of Cotton Cow, and here’s what he had to say about the lush green pastures of Cotton Cow:

On the cottoncow site you can buy cool t-shirts. Designers can present themselves and their new designs to a t-shirt friendly crowd or just communicate with likeminded people who share their passion for cool t-shirts. There are regular t-shirt design contests for designers, plus the top five designs will be manufactured and sold. The lucky designers of these tees will receive a revenue share for each of their designs sold.

So it seems that Cotton Cow might just be Germany’s answer to Threadless. Nothing like a bit of local competition to keep things interesting!

(Just a little pre-warning, the Cotton Cow website is entirely written German. For those of you who are not proficient in saying “Ich bin eins jahre alt” you might want to try the babelfish website translator tool).

There are some words that you don’t realise even exist, even though you probably say them every day. One of them is Wooshka.

Well, let me rephrase that. Wooshka was one of those words….before the Melbourne’s hottest new ongoing t-shirt competition named Wooshka rocked the online world.

So if you’re wondering what exactly an ongoing t-shirt comp is all about, to be brash, you must have had your head in the sand digging for worms for the last few years. Most t-shirt savvy punks know Threadless.com like the back of their hand - Wooshka is based on a similar model.

Designers (me, you…anyone who dares) can elect to become part of the Wooshka community, and immediately after joining the community you have the rite of passage to submit design ideas and help decide which designs will go to print and officially become part of the Wooshka range. Participants who submit the winning designs, will win cash and a Wooshka gift voucher.

Not only that, but as a Wooshkorian you will be voting on many other important decisions regarding the label’s direction. Essentially, you are a partial decision maker for the brand. Cool huh. This is Wooshka’s point of differentiation from the ever-increasing number of ongoing t-shirt design comps out there. And what’s more, if you help make a decisions (through ballots and feedback) you’ll get duly paid for it in Street Crew credits.

And for those concerned about going out on Saturday night and being seen in the same tee as the bloke beside you in the line for your local club, do not worry. There’s only 500 of each tee to be printed…ever…and they will dispersed throughout the world.

Wooshka’s a label which is virtually owned by it’s consumers. Anyone can submit designs, anyone can vote and influence company-related decisions.

If only the big companies of the world took note, our commercial world would start heading in the right direction…

RedBubble is a freely accessible online forum, designed to give undiscovered artists and designers a kick start into the industry. Redbubble aims to assist these up-and-comers by promoting talent to a wide and established audience.

My friendly counterparts at Pistol Clothing have recently launched a new website. For those of you who haven’t heard, Pistol Clothing are one of the prime producers of customised tees in Australia. Without Pockets is an Aussie t-shirt design comp run by a chap by the name of Simon, based in the sunny capital city of Queensland.

Without Pockets is essentially an Aussie version of the Threadless business model.

Here’s how Without Pockets works…
* Any old Joe (it could be you, me, or the grandma next door) submits their original design to the Without Pockets website.
* The design then appears on the Without Pockets site for a 14 day period. Visitors vote on how cool they think the design is.
* The most popular designs are selected by Simon and the gang to be printed onto t-shirts, and sold on the Without Pockets website
* Winning designers receive $1,500 in cash and prizes for each winning design they submit

Cruising through the virtual shelves of Ripe Off The Press I stumbled across some particularly fine bits of glossy paper.

These shiny pages form an exciting new publication known as the T-Journal, a printed biannual totally dedicated to the short-sleeved wonders of the modern world.

It’s the handiwork of a chap named Eddie Zammit, based across Melbourne and Sydney in the land of Oz. Here’s the official rundown on the T-Journal…

…Eddie has just launched a publication based on his favorite topic of T-shirts. Anyone that knows Eddie, will understand that he is quite simply obsessed with the idea of collecting T-shirts. “I have enough T-shirts in my wardrobe to at least wear one a day for an entire year,” he said.

Eddie has been working on T-Journal in his downtime with colleague Luke Fraser. Along with a worldwide network, including an editor that’s based in London, T-Journal is a 100% dose of pure T-shirt adrenaline, aimed at and produced by T-shirt junkies.

I just discovered www.wikihow.com. It’s DIY heaven!!!

Of course, the first thing I did (after I checked out a random article on how to make a fake fireplace, then one on how to create sim card earrings) was type in ‘t shirt‘. I was in for a great surprise.

Yep, there’s articles galore on stencilling your own t-shirt prints, designing tees, stencilling fabric, and printing on various other materials.

Get creative with your search terms and you’ll be busy for hours.

My suggestion - try typing in search terms such as ’stencil’, ‘fashion’, ‘textile’ etc. That should be enough to whet your appetite!

So I got a bit of feedback the other day….it turns out that the female population were feeling a little left out here and there on tshirtalert.com. I’ve been making a concerted effort to even up the score lately!

It was indeed a timely discovery, when I was wandering around earlier today and stubbed my toe on Seattle Exchange, which will hopefully begin to fill the gender-based void which I have apparently absentmindedly created.

Seattle Exchange grabbed my attention because their core values are very much aligned with ours here at t-shirt-alert.

Seattlexchange.co.uk is a clothing company dedicated to bringing you one of a kind, unusual items at reasonable prices…Original designs that are sure to make a statement and make heads turn…

So what exactly do Seattle Exchange do that is so unique? Well, if you send them your favourite t-shirt, they’ll turn it into something a little different. It’s like Renovation Rescue, using your preloved tees as the basis for a brand new piece of clothing.

Here’s a sneakity peekity at a couple of the original creations from Seattle Exchange, each made from an old t-shirt and some good old fashioned creativity.

Kazbah is the latest & greatest invention from the wonderful minds who form the well respected gang known as KarmaLoop (for the curiously minded folk out there, check out my previous article on Karmloop by clickn here ).

The Kazbah concept is very exciting indeedily. A recent article on Springwise offers a great explanation of the Kazbah proposal, so here’s an extract….

Karmaloop, an online retailer of cutting edge streetwear (”founded in 1999 to battle the evil forces of McFashion”), has just announced that it will launch an online marketplace for up and coming designers and artists.

Pitching itself as the new, global bazaar for all things cool, unique and beautiful, Karmaloop’s Kazbah will sell t-shirts, clothes, accessories, jewellery and art created by selected artists and designers. These merchants will be able to show and sell their creations to Karmaloop’s one million monthly website visitors. Each gets an own Karmaloop Kazbah brand page, with order processing and site maintenance handled by Karmaloop’s staff, in exchange for a stall rental fee. Sellers are responsible for shipping and customer care.

Karmaloop is currently taking submissions, to be vetted by the Kazbah Genie, and Kazbah’s first shops will appear online in June 2006.

The selection process is key. It positions Karmaloop as a curator, setting Kazbah apart from many other online selling platforms….

So I went to the Karmaloop website for a bit more info, and managed to scratch up a bit more data on this fancy little idea…

Karmaloop Kazbah is a bazaar featuring original design/art product made in the kitchens, lofts and vestibules of Karmaloop’s hyper talented customers. The Kazbah will feature the wares of select artists. Since Kazbah artists will be handpicked by the inimitable, always ready to jump on his stallion (or carpet) and charge into the face of danger, Kazbah Genie, you know they’re gonna be hype and worthy of portrayal in the tales of Scheheradze.

…if only I knew what that meant.

I think it means that this is a great step forward for the home-based/hobby design community. It will provide a fantastic shopfront for up and coming designers, with the key benefit being the provision of an established brandname and online business with a solid reputation.

And for all us other peoples, it means we have a greater choice of what we can buy. Hooray, for more cool stuff!

Let’s hope the Kazbah rocks as much as it sounds like it will. I’ll keep you posted…

La Fraise is a French le company, with le similar business model to le Threadless.

In case you didn’t know, La Fraise is actually French for strawberry. I knew I had heard it somewhere before - it was plastered on a tub of Yoplait yoghurt I had last week…

In simple terms, La Fraise is an ongoing online t-shirt design competition. The winning designs are then printed and available for purchase from their website.

Here’s what le dudes at La Fraise have to say about it all…

Lafraise is a 500 items limited tshirts editor. It offers to graphists, designers a visual permanently contest and, for the winners, offers 1000€ to print the tshirt. The purpose is finally to produce, sell the most appreciate visuals according to the visitors’ vote.

Obviously, there is a little catch with La Fraise being based in France - they speak a language that is not my mother tongue (as I said before, I learnt all the French in my vocabulary from a tub of yoghurt). Consequently, there’s the odd t-shirt print that just goes straight over my head. Any idea what this one means??

Don’t this deter you though. Jump onto La Fraise now and see what you can decipher. If all fails, there’s plenty of pretty pictures!!

It’s Pistol Clothing and it’s schmokin!

Established this year, Pistol Clothing is Australia’s first online store for customised tees. ‘Twas formed to cater for the growing needs in Oztralia for funky yet professional custom t-shirt printing, and is particularly handy for those who are after limited and hassle-free t-shirt print runs. I hear the Pistol dudes are even willing to give cheep cheep prices for bulk orders, plus they deliver to anywhere in Australia.

Split the Atom is probably best described as a UK version of Threadless. If you don’t know (or care) what Threadless is, this little spin from the Split dudes will explain the concept properly…

(Yep, you get to decide which tees we print! Cool, huh?) T-post is a t-shirt subscription service inspired by news stories. Every six weeks, the Swedish company takes a new item that has caught their attention, and designs a t-shirt based on that story.

For instance, their latest release was inspired by an article by world reknowned photographer Jens Assur, who revealed that the thing he loves about dogs, is that they offer love on command. (Jens obviously hasn’t met my moody mutt…)

Every t-shirt comes with its story printed on the inside of the neck, like an elaborate neck tag. After subscribing, customers are sent a new tee every six weeks. The shirts are printed in Stockholm and cost around EUR 26/USD 32 a piece, including shipping. T-post delivers worldwide.
